Hey Everyone-
Happy holidays. The Levine Musem in Charlotte has told me that me show will come down sometime late next week, so if you haven't had the chance to check out my show, hurry before they start grabbing. And for those of you that have asked, those photos will be for sale once they are off the msueum's walls, so feel free to place those orders now, if you are so inclined.
Happy Christmas and my thanks to all of you, and I hope to see and photograph
you all in the coming year. Cheers,
-Daniel

Hey Everybody-
Happy holidays. As some of you in Charlotte may have already heard, the Americana Restaurant in Pineville closed last weekend, after a few short weeks in business. Thankfully, I was able to get all of my photos back, which brings me to this holiday sales pitch.
I'm selling all of my photos from the Americana for half-off during the month of December. This means framed 8x10s of Ray Charles, Avett Brothers, Down From The Mountain tour pics and others for $75, and glass-framed 22"x27" prints of Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan and others for $160. Again, that's half off of what the restaurant was selling them for. Either way, you get a cool present for a good price, and there would be more space in my den (which my cat Milo would greatly appreciate).
Just email me at the website, or call me at (704) 578-1748. I hope you're all
having a good month. More soon, and take care,
-Daniel

Hey Everyone
Happy Turkey month! I will be appearing again at the Levine Museum of the New
South (7th and
College Streets, in downtown Charlotte) on Sunday, November 18th at 2pm, to
talk about my upcoming Levine exhibit, and the history of North Carolina music
with my friend Meg Freeman-Whalen. Meg and I will also talk about a book project
we are working on about North Carolina musicians, and well as delving into some
other photos of mine you may not have seen yet. For those of you that weren't
able to make my show opening, please come out and check out my photos.
Unfortunately, I was not able to do photos for Cavestomp in New York City this weekend, as I had previously told you. Life and business have a funny way of wrecking one's plans. My apologies to Cavestomp, and I hope to catch the Sonics somewhere down the road.
I did however photograph John Edwards and Danny Glover in Rock Hill last Friday (Nov. 2nd), as they spotlighted the Place For Hope Center. Recent gigs also include work with the reunited Squirrel Nut Zippers, the Old Ceremony, Martin Stephenson and Helen McCookerybook (thanks for all of that, Martin & Helen), filmmaker John Waters, the Southern Folklife Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill, and a variety of events for the Charlotte Observer, Charlotte Magazine, and others. The feature that I shot for Spin last month will also be out soon.
The Americana restuarant in Pineville (www.theamericana.net) is now open, and features 13 of my photos on its walls. And yes, these photos are also for sale! Please come by, grab a meal and check out some photos of mine you probably haven't seen before.
Hope you're all doing well. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and
friends of legendary photographer Ernest Withers, who passed away last month.
Meeting Ernest in late 2004 and spending an evening swapping cameras and stories
with him was one of the best nights I've ever spent as a photographer. To be
around Ernest and his work was a rare opportunity to see the possibilities of
a lifetime of great photography. Cheers and best wishes, and take care,
-Daniel

Hey Everybody-

Wow, what a month it has been. First of all, thanks to all of you who came out for the opening of my show at the Levine Museum of the New South last month. You exceeded even the Museum's expectations, and repsonse has been just fantastic. I'll be at the Museum again on Sunday, November 18 at 2pm, with my friend Meg Whalen to talk about NC music, and a book we're working on about North Carolina musicians. More on that soon. And, as mentioned before, my show is now up at the Levine until the end of the year. Come by and check it out.
I got to shoot my first feature for Spin Magazine a week ago, for a story about up-and-coming emo bands. On top of that, I have been given the opportunity to photograph Cavestomp, a three-day garage rock festival in New York City the first weekend of November. This amazing is highlighted by the first shows in 31 years by the legendary Sonics, who may have been the greatest of the garage bandsl, then or now. There are only five or six bands that I've promised myself that I see anywhere in the world if they reunited, and they're pretty freakin' high on that list. I am so ready for this gig, I assure you. Check out www.myspace.com/cavestomp2007 for more info.
I will also be exhibiting several of my photos at the Americana, a new music-themed restaurant here in Charlotte, located near Carolina Place Mall in the Pineville area. Unlike the Levine exhibit, these photos will be for sale, so check out their food and the pics. You can learn more about the Americana through www.theamericana.net.
Along with working with some new bands, and a forthcoming announcement about a printing deal that I've finally put together (for those of you who've been telling me that you'd like to see large, limited edition versions of my work, get ready), you may have also heard that I got married a couple of weeks ago. Sandra and I have been together for a long time, and I really can't put my feelings for her into words. My thanks to her, our cat Milo, and all of you that came out for the wedding. To quote Lou Reed, it was a perfect day.
Hope you're all doing well. More soon, take care,
-Daniel

My show at the Levine Museum here in Charlotte (located downtown at the corner
of 6th and Chruch Street) is now up and running. My official opening is set
for 2pm on Sunday, September 16. Admission is free, and food will be provided
by The Americana Restaurant (www.theamericana.net).
I will be at the opening, as well, and talking about my photos with whoever
wants to hear about them. Hope to see you there. More news coming soon,

Hey Everyone-

Wow, where did the summer go? I apologize for taking so long between postings, but I've been waiting to let you all know about some big news. And here goes.
I'll be exhibiting at the prestigious Levine Museum of the New South, located in Charlotte, throughout the entire fall. I have been asked to exhibit 25 photos of North Carolina musicians, to go along with the national Rhythm & Roots exhibit at the Museum. It was a genuine honor to be asked, and to put this exhibition (entitled "Music In Your Backyard") together.
There will be an official opening for my exhibit on Sunday, September 16th at 2pm. I will also be back at the Museum on Sunday, November 18th with my friend Meg Whalen to talk about the exhibit, and another project that I'll tell you more about soon. And yes, my photos will be at the Museum until the end of this year.
To go along with all of things, there's some new work to tell you about. "The Soundfield Sessions" by Martin Stephenson will be out this fall on Ramseur Records. These recordings were done in 2004 throughout North Carolina, with photographs taken by myself. I also have photos in the new Regina Hexaphone record (www.myspace.com/reginahexaphone). I also recently did photos for upcoming CDs by Chatham County Line and the Sammies, and promo photos for Maryz Eyez (a great band from Michigan and LA), and Sweet By & By, a fantastic all-female quartet from Durham. Notables shows I've photographed recently include Wilco, Hippiefest (with the Zombies, Turtles, and other great 60s bands), Jerry Butler & Percy Sledge, and numerous festivals around North Carolina.
In case you missed it (as did I), I was interviewed for the April issue of
Southeast Performer (www.performermag.com).
Look it up in the archives. There's a few more things going on that I'll tell
you about soon. Hope everyone's doing well. Godspeed Lee Hazlewood, and Rockin'
Ray Gooding. Love to all, and take care,
-Daniel

Thanks to everyone who made it out to see Wildwood Flowers last month, and saw my Carter Family photos in the lobby. Hopefully, we'll do that again sometime.
James Alan Shelton's new album, photographed by yours truly, is now available at www.jamesalanshelton.com. Check out Blender Magazine this month for my photo of Earl Greyhound from SXSW. I also just finished a shoot for CMT of the Longbranch Saloon in Raleigh. My sincere thanks to the Saloon for making me feel so welcome. The new issue of the Big Takeover (www.bigtakeover.com) is now out, featuring my interviews with the Quarrymen and Hilton Valentine, and my recent live photos of the Decemberists and the Sammies. Check it out!
More news and pics coming soon. Have a good summer, and take care,
-Daniel

Sorry that I have been slack on updating you on recent events. There's been a lot going on, so let's begin.
If you're in Charlotte, NC the next couple of weeks, I'll be exhibiting seven photos at Booth Playhouse (part of the Bleumenthal Center downtown) as part of the production of "Wildwood Flowers: The June Carter Cash Story." These photos feature some of my work with the Carter Family, as well as a few names that you'll recognize. The show will be running from May 16th to the 27th, so come on by and chek out my photos in the lobby area.
I just finished shooting the new record for Chris Stamey & Peter Holsapple, of the legendary dbs, which will be out later this week. This shoot was a lot of fun, and was a thrill for a fan and photographer like myself. Peter and I are huge fans of the Left Banke, and other 60s pop-rock bands, and one of our conversations prompted Stamey to say, "I hope you two donate your brains to science." You gotta love it.
Also of recent note is shooting a record for James Alan Shelton, guitarist for the legendary Dr. Ralph Stanley. James is a fantastic singer and guitarist, and shooting this record in Tennessee was just a blast. I also did photos for NC band Lambhandler's debut CD, "Shepherds Of Rock" (which you should pick up now, if you haven't already. Savoy Brown's new album Steel, featuring my photo of Kim Simmonds, is also now out, and is great addition to the band's storied history. There are a few more CDs in the works by some names you'll recognize that I can tell you about as soon as I see the albums. I should also mention recent shoots and quick pics with folks such as the New Familiars, Transmission Fields, Carmine Appice (legendary Vanilla Fudge drummer), Chad & Jeremy (which you can see at www.chadandjeremy.com), and others.
The SXSW festival once again kicked my butt. So much to photograph, and see. You can see two of my festival photos in the current issue of Mojo Magazine, as well as recent issues of Creative Loafing and Amps 11 magazine. The lovely Mary Weiss is featuring several of my photos of her on her Myspace page (www.myspace.com/maryweiss), and the fantastic Ian McLagan has some of my photos on his site (www.macspages.com). Seeing Mac with Pete Townshend playing "Whatcha Gonna Do About It?" coulda made a grown man weep with joy. Fat Cat Records (www.fat-cat.co.uk) also has some photos I took of Vashti Bunyan with legendary producers Joe Boyd and Andrew Loog Oldham. Ms. Bunyan later wrote me to say that it was the first time that she'd ever had photos taken with "her producers." Wow.
Other great shows that we recently photographed was Merlefest with Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Elvis Costello and lots more), Decemberists, Arcade Fire, Hubert Sumlin reuniting with fellow Howlin' Wolf bandmember Eddie Shaw, Cowboy Junkies with Teddy Thompson, Gillian Welch, Jet, Stephen Stills, and much more. You'll see much of this on the website soon.
The next issue of the Big Takeover (www.bigtakeover.com) will feature my interviews with the Quarrymen (yes, that Quarrymen), and Hilton Valentine of the Animals, as well as 12 photos from the aforementioned Decemberists show. Other recent publications include Acoustic Guitar Magazine, EntertainmentWeekly.com, and others.
Thanks to everyone who came out to see my show at G&L Center. That show
will appear again soon in another form. There's lots more in the works, so check
back soon for updates. Love to all, and take care,
-Daniel

Hey Everybody-
Sorry it's been so long since I've last written. I had some projects that were in development (and some that still are, actually) and prevented from giving you a full update. Happy New Year, and here's what has been going on.
Thanks to everyone that came out to my show of Cash photos in Raleigh, and my show of NC musicians in Charlotte. Both shows got fantastic press, and thanks to those of you that bought photos. And for those of you that didn't see the shows, your chance has not been missed! Several of my Cash pics are now up in the lounge area of the Bickett Gallery (www.bickettgallery.com), and will be there for a little while longer. Meanwhile, my show of NC musicians is still up at the Lesbian & Gay Community Center of Charlotte (703-333-0144, 1401 Central Avenue). The Center in Charlotte has been going through re-organization, and I decided to leave my photos there for now to help bring some more people to the Center. Check both shows out, while you still can.
Photos, and lots of photos to tell you the past few months. I got to do the dbs' first photo session in 25 years last weekend, while they were recording their new album. Thanks guys! New work with the Avett Brothers on their New Year's show, and photos of the band in the studio. Photographing the reunited Squirrel Nut Zippers for the UNC alumni magazine. Photographing Vashti Bunyan and Vetiver, which you can see now on their UK label website (www.fat-cat.co.uk), as well as work with the Charlotte Philharmonic, and a couple of magazines, including Harp, Southern Living, Entertainment Weekly.com, and a couple more here and there. You can also see my interviews with the Magic Numbers and Richie Furay in the current issue of the Big Takeover (www.bigtakeover.com).
Brighter/Later, a new best-of by Duncan Sheik (out now on Warner/Rhino), features a photo of mine from 2001. An upcoming best-of from Hightone Records will also feature a Dave Alvin photo of mine from 1999, and the recent re-issue of the Drive-By Truckers' Pizza Deliverance also features a photo of mine from that same year. On the more recent front, new photocalls include Savoy Brown, Sammy Walker, Nicole Atkins (Columbia Records), the Everybodyfields, Lambhandler, Shuffletown, and a couple of others. I've also been grabbing a bunch of posed and candids recently at various shows, some of which you'll see soon on this page.
Have you come to this page looking for wedding photos? Yes, I do shoot weddings when I'm not following rock stars, and while I haven't had the chance to put up a page of those pics, email me here at daniel@danielcostonphotography.com, and I'll send you a CD of those pics for your perusal.
Hope you're all having a good year so far. Best wishes to the friends and families
of Sneaky Pete Kleinow, James Brown, Robert Lockwood Jr., and other friends
we've recently lost. Safe travels, love to all and take care.
